Located in the southwest of Yamanashi Prefecture, surrounded by the Southern Alps, Hayakawa Town is the smallest town in Japan, with 96% of the town's area covered by forest and a population of 1,067 (as of November 2016). In March2016, the old town hall, which had been standing for over 50 years, was replaced with a new one.Aiming to complete the new town hall as the "core of a new regional culture," "a place for people to interact," and "a symbol of the region," townspeople of various generations participated from the design stage in workshops, resident interviews, site tours, etc., and by utilizing local wood, the town hall was created in pursuit of the "characteristics of Hayakawa Town," and has been loved for many years.

Director

Isamu Kojima

As a partner of Hayakawa Town, our team of experts worked closely together to help with the construction of the new town hall. We provided a wide range of assistance, from acting as advisors for the basic plan, to interviewing townspeople, and planning the interior and furniture using wood.

The basis of everything was the pursuit of "Hayakawa Town identity" and how to make it familiar to the townspeople and other users. Using local wood can achieve one purpose, but we thought that we needed to add something to it, so we actively incorporated familiar "scenery" and "local resources." The wood was made up of a combination of different sizes, colors and tree species, and designed simply so that the wood's original grain and color could be recognized, and we tried to convey the goodness of wood to the townspeople and visitors alike. At the same time, we also placed importance on the ease and efficiency of the staff, and we designed the building while communicating closely with the client, and we feel that we have created a town hall that is also excellent in terms of functionality.

In this project, the architectural designers and the office and furniture designers all had a clear and common goal, and we feel that we were able to achieve results by working together with the client with a consistent concept.
