Itoki x Mie University x Dalton jointly research the use of coffee bean grounds, which are attracting attention as a sustainable and eco-friendly material
"Coffee Grounds board", a board whose materials are all derived from plants, will be exhibited as a reference at the booths of the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Organization and Mie University.
ITOKI CORPORATION (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Minato; hereinafter "ITOKI") has been conducting joint research with Mie University (Location: Tsu City, Mie Prefecture; President: Masaaki Ito; hereinafter "Mie University") and Dalton Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Takayuki Ando; hereinafter "Dalton") on the utilization of "coffee grounds" generated after drip brewing. The "Coffee Grounds Board", a prototype board created as part of this research, will be exhibited at two booths, the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency of Japan and the Mie University Wood Molecular Material Control Laboratory, at EcoPro 2022, which will be held at Tokyo Big Sight from December 7th to 9th, 2022.

Approximately 400,000 tons of coffee beans are imported into Japan each year, and as consumption through cafes, restaurants, convenience stores, and households increases, the amount of coffee bean waste disposed of is also increasing. . It has attracted attention as a sustainable and eco-friendly material, and advances have been made from an early stage in its use, focusing on its deodorizing and deodorizing effects. However, this tripartite research aims to reduce waste, reduce environmental impact, and improve the use of furniture. We took on the challenge of turning it into an upcycled product by utilizing it.
About “Coffee Grounds board” that uses coffee bean grounds
The plate made from coffee bean grounds used for the board is an "all-biomass plate" molded using only natural materials without using petroleum-based resin. In addition, the core material to which the plates are glued is also made of wood, making the product entirely plant-based.

Through the newly created "Coffee Grounds board," Itoki will present a new way to use coffee grounds, and will continue to contribute to the effective use of waste, the creation of a recycling-oriented society, and a decarbonized society that does not use petroleum-based plastics. We aim to contribute to the

- A technology that extrudes biomass powder (wood flour, bamboo flour, coffee grounds, etc.) using a material made from cellulose, which accounts for 50% of wood. Winner of Wood Design Award 2018. Currently, research is being promoted with the Ministry of the Environment's FY2020 Environmental Research Promotion Fund, ``Establishment of a biomass powder extrusion molding/water-resistant system using cellulose derivatives as an auxiliary agent'' (research representative: Hiroshi Nonaka).
