"Flexibility" is the No. 1 quality young workers want in an ideal manager in the COVID-19 era
~ Management's work has changed significantly over the past year ~

Survey of executives' (executive directors, managers) work-related attitudes

ITOKI CORPORATION workers (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoshiro Hirai) conducted a survey of 1,117 executives (directors and managers) at companies with 100 or more employees in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Summary of survey results
  • Over the past year, 70% of executives feel that their workload has increased.
  • The work of executives is increasingly involving the use of ICT tools and the ability to think and act independently.
  • When asked what the most important quality in an ideal management team is, one in four young workers in their 20s answered "flexibility."

A year has passed since the Work Style Reform Act came into force, and as work styles change with and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the qualities required of management are likely to be "the ability to respond flexibly to change and take the lead in bringing about change."

Survey results details

1. 70.7% of executives and managers feel that their workload has increased over the past year.

We found that 70% of executives responded that their workload has increased over the past year.

Among those who feel that their workload has increased, many feel that they are increasingly using ICT tools for "information gathering (Internet)," "email checking," and "web conferencing." In addition, there is also an increasing trend for roles that require them to think and act independently, such as "viewing documents" and "creating documents."

Among the ICT tools actually used by executives, tablet devices are not as widely used as PCs, but their usage rate among executives is high at 37.9%, compared to 11.9% for general workers.

It is expected that executives will increasingly use ICT tools for information gathering and other working methods in the future.

2. The top quality for an ideal manager is "flexibility" for those in their 20s, while it is "leadership" for those in their 30s and older.

When we asked 912 workers, excluding executives, what they thought was the most important quality in an ideal management team, "leadership" was given high marks across all generations, but those in their 20s were far ahead of those in their 30s and above, with "flexibility" being the highest at 25%. Other than that, those in their 20s also had the highest marks for "initiative" and "ability to change."

Young workers in their 20s are thought to want executives to take the lead in bringing about change.
