ITOKI, NICT, and Sharp conduct 5G smart office demonstration test through joint research by three parties
~Demo to be exhibited at "5G International Symposium 2018" on March 27th and 28th~
ITOKI CORPORATION (headquarters: Joto-ku, Osaka; President: Yoshiro Hirai; hereinafter "ITOKI") has concluded a joint research agreement with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (hereinafter "NICT") (headquarters: Koganei City, Tokyo; President: Hideyuki Tokuda) and Sharp Corporation (headquarters: Sakai City, Osaka; President: Tai Zhengwu) to investigate what will happen to "work styles" and what offices will be like when "large capacity," "low latency," and "multiple simultaneous connections" become reality through 5G (next-Osaka Prefecture mobile communications system). The two companies have been conducting demonstration tests (*1) of 5G usage environments in offices.
5G, which is aimed to be put into practical use by 2020, is expected to be used as a new communications infrastructure that supports a variety of fields, including AI, IoT, smart cars, robots, and VR.
Toward the realization of smart offices, ITOKI, NICT, and Sharp have built a test environment that serves as an example of this, and have confirmed the usefulness of 5G in high-speed communications and in offices with multiple connections.
Test environment ordered and constructed by ITOKI from NICT (※2)
-
Base station built-in table assuming 5G frequencies
High-speed video transmission via the table allows for remote conferencing and document sharing.
⇒We aim to ensure smooth communication that is the same as face-to-face, even when working from anywhere, such as telework. -
Office chair with IoT communication function
Collect posture data of seated people and visualize it in an app.
⇒By contributing to improving working attitudes, we aim to maintain and improve employee health and increase company productivity.

These devices will be exhibited jointly by NICT and Sharp Corporation at the 5G International Symposium 2018, to be held by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications at the Tokyo International House (Koto-ku, Tokyo) from March 27th to 28th, 2018, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience a part of what offices will be like when 5G is realized.
ITOKI will continue to propose future visions for offices and contribute to creating more attractive office spaces.
Related Information
- 1 This exhibition is related to the demonstration of a smart office as part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' technical testing project "Technical study towards the introduction of 5th generation mobile communications systems (5G comprehensive demonstration test)," which was contracted by NICT in FY2017 to "contract to investigate and study the technical conditions for a 5th generation mobile communications system that will enable simultaneous communication of approximately 20,000 devices indoors."
- 2 The antennas on the communications sheet built into the table were developed by ITOKI for this joint research project.
