Management and reduction of chemical substances
In order to promote manufacturing that emphasizes safety and health, the Itoki Group appropriately understands the toxicity of chemical substances and minimizes the amount of chemical substances used from the product design, development, and manufacturing stages to use and disposal. We strive for proper management and information disclosure.
Basic concept of chemical substance management
The ITOKI Group designs safe products that comply with domestic and international chemical substance-related laws and regulations and other requirements, based on the ITOKI Group Chemical Substance Green Procurement Guidelines.
Furthermore, regarding the reduction of chemical substances, we are promoting the study of paints and improvements in the painting process, with the main goal of reducing chemical substances subject to the PRTR system such as VOCs.
Continuously strengthening and operating the chemical substance management system
The Itoki Group is conducting thorough management and reduction activities for PRTR-designated substances used at each factory and manufacturing group company. We also require raw material manufacturers to provide products that comply with the ITOKI Group Green Procurement Guidelines for Chemical Substances. In principle, we obtain SDS (Safety Data Sheets), understand the listed properties and ingredients, and handle them internally. In addition to thorough risk management, we are switching to alternative materials with less environmental impact and switching to powder coating.
Timely and accurate risk assessment and appropriate management of chemical substances
Based on SDS (safety data sheets) obtained from raw material manufacturers, we evaluate the toxicity of chemical substances, and determine and implement procedures for each handling location, such as wearing protective equipment when handling chemicals and first aid methods in the event of exposure. doing. Additionally, based on the idea of preventing leakage to the outside world, in addition to the above operations, we are also taking physical protective measures such as installing liquid dikes. We will continue to strive to maintain appropriate evaluation and operational management systems.
Case study: Consideration for human health (GREENGUARD certification)
We actively use health-friendly materials based on laws and regulations and guidelines set by the Japan Office Furniture Association (JOIFA). We are also in the process of obtaining GREENGUARD certification, an environmental certification system in the United States, and as of December 2022, 54 products, including "vertebra03", have obtained the stricter GOLD certification.
KPIs and results for FY2022
2022 target | 7 % reduction in usage of substances subject to notification under the PRTR Act (compared to fiscal 2015) |
---|---|
FY2022 results | 44 % reduction in usage of substances subject to notification under the PRTR Law (compared to fiscal 2015) |
Future tasks
In the future, we will shift from management based on the current PRTR system to creating a database of all chemical substances we handle, building a system to seamlessly share information with related departments, and ensuring that those who handle chemical substances are thoroughly informed about management methods, etc. We need to continue to do so. We will continue to evolve our system and carry out appropriate chemical substance management.
