Itoki's history

Over time as the office evolves.
The spirit of our founding has been passed down to this day.

Our company was established in 1890 as Itoki Shoten.
Itoki's history of over 120 years is a trail of INNOVATION, creating things that had never existed in the world before, such as the ZENIAIKI (Money recording machine-the origin of cash register).
The spirit of our company's origins has remained unchanged and has been passed down from generation to generation.

Itoki Shoten was founded on December 1, 1890 (Meiji 23) by Kijuro Ito with the aim of popularizing patented products. It became known as the "high-quality shop in town." Two of the most popular products are the paper clip and the stapler, which are commonly used in today's offices. Both were imported and sold in 1903 (Meiji 36), and both are said to have been registered trademarks of Itoki Shoten. In particular, the company later started producing staplers in-house, and the stylish design in the shape of a pigeon made them a big hit.

Image of establishing three major systems

In the 1950s, underpinned by high economic growth, not only factories began to automate, but offices began to need rationalization as they expanded in size. As a document management system for modern management, Itoki created the trend that ``the first step in streamlining office work is a filing system,'' and contributed to the efficient operation of office work and the improvement of the work environment, especially in local governments. Furthermore, by selling three major systems, we have added the "Voucher Accounting System" that eliminates posting to ledgers, and the "Office Layout" that proposes a functional arrangement of furniture, office machines, equipment, etc. centered on the desk. This led to the establishment of the Itoki name.

Quick Boner Team Lecture Photos

It can be said that the company that created the origins of modern office design was the office planning consultancy company, Quickborner Team. They believed that the essence of office work lies in information and communication, and proposed an office that differed from the traditional geometric layout, and their idea was called the ``office landscape.'' Itoki invited Dieter Jaeger, the leader of the Quick Boner team, to hold lectures and seminars on office planning for managers and architectural experts. At the time, the idea of thinking about office space from the perspective of management efficiency, which is similar to modern facility management, was accepted as innovative.

Image of Itoki CI system introduction

Itoki's CI was introduced in 1985 with the theme of "creating an environment where people can make the most of their lives." The core symbol mark, with nine ascending strokes representing the completion and maximum of ITOKI's "I", expresses the corporate and individual character that will be required of future offices. The logotype is a combination of two "I"s and one "O", expressing the desire for stability between the company and its customers. In addition, the symbol color is Itoki orange as the main color, green and blue, and is an image of the office of the future where people can be brought to their full potential through harmony, tension, and energy.

A quality control method called TQM (total quality management) was proposed in the United States in the 1980s, and has been actively researched in Japan, especially in the manufacturing industry. In 1982, the former Itoki Clebio introduced a quality control method called TQC, which became the basis of TQM. We have striven for comprehensive quality control in all processes, from product planning and design to manufacturing and sales and after-sales service. In 1989, our achievements were recognized and we received the Deming Prize (Implementation Award), which is given to companies that are recognized for significantly improving performance through comprehensive quality management. We have gained recognition for our corporate activities that prioritize quality and improvement for our customers.

Photos from Kevin Roach's 100th Anniversary Lecture

Itoki celebrated its 100th anniversary on December 10, 1989. Prior to this, we opened the Osaka New Office Gallery in October to introduce the office environment in its real form. Furthermore, in August 1990, a historical museum was opened on the second floor of the Heiji Building, located in Hiranomachi 2-chome, the birthplace of Itoki. Here, early catalogs and original products such as Zeniaiki are displayed, and it is a place where you can feel the company's philosophy, which has remained unchanged since its founding. In addition, at the 100th anniversary lecture, we will demonstrate our presence as a pioneer in office creation by inviting Kevin Roach, winner of the Pritzker Prize, known as the Nobel Prize of architecture, to propose new offices in a variety of ways. I appealed.

Announcement of “ITOKI New Color Program”

1990 “Itoki New Color Program” announced

Image photo of “ITOKI New Color Program”

Until the mid-1980s, offices were designed with priority given to form and function. Color began to be recognized as another design element. Therefore, Itoki contracted with CDM (Castelli Design Milano), which is headed by Mr. Clino Castelli, who has worked on color system development for automobile manufacturers and other companies. We announced the ``Itoki New Color System'' as a color system of color, material, and finish as the three elements of color coordination in office furniture. In 1990 (Heisei 2), we held a lecture by Mr. Castelli and exhibited products such as Assorted Line, Vertebra Chair, and Thinline Cabinet that adopted the color system, promoting the color Itoki.

Itoki has always enlightened office theory from a variety of perspectives, such as by launching ``OFFICE LIFE'' in 1974 (Showa 49) and ``OFFICE AGE'' in 1987 (Showa 62). We launched the magazine ``Udeco Style'' in 1999 (Heisei 11) to convey the message of ``Ud & Eco style'', which was set up as a 21st century concept for creating an environment where people are the main players. The first issue featured a contribution from Elaine Ostrov, one of the proponents of the ``Seven Principles of Universal Design,'' and 19 issues have been published as of June 2009. We provide the latest information on universal design and eco-design.

Itoki Shoten was founded in Osaka in 1890 (Meiji 23). In 1908 (Meiji 41), the manufacturing department was established, and in 1950 (Showa 25), the department became independent as Itoki Kosakusho Co., Ltd. It later manufactured office equipment and steel furniture as ITOKI CORPORATION, while the sales department had been operating for many years as ITOKI CORPORATION, Ltd. The two companies were merged in 2005 (Heisei 17). The new Itoki was started with the aim of further pursuing the spirit of "being ahead of the times" and "inspirational value" that has been the foundation of the company.
